Andy Burnham secures Labour MPs’ nominations to block any leadership challenge
Burnham’s total nominations rose to 349, leaving no other candidate able to reach the 81 endorsements required to challenge for Labour leadership, according to Labour’s tally.
Andy Burnham took another step toward becoming Britain’s next prime minister after gaining additional nominations from Labour MPs that left him with an unassailable lead in the party’s leadership contest, according to the SCMP Economy citing an AFP account.
Burnham, a 56-year-old veteran politician and Greater Manchester mayor for nearly a decade, is the only Labour MP to publicly declare a candidacy to replace outgoing Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who announced his resignation last month after internal pressure tied to scandals, missteps and policy U-turns.
Labour confirmed the latest nominations count after the first day of voting on Thursday, when Burnham secured endorsements from 322 of 403 Labour MPs. By Monday afternoon, he had gained an additional 27 nominations, bringing his secured total to 349.
With 349 nominations secured, Labour’s rules require 81 endorsements for another candidate to challenge for the leadership, making it impossible for any rival to meet the threshold, the outlet reported.
