Hong Kong charity concert highlights poverty pressures in subdivided flats

Organisers estimate more than 200,000 children in Hong Kong may live in poverty and about 50,000 minors live in subdivided flats.

A charity concert scheduled for October at the Cultural Centre in Tsim Sha Tsui will feature young performers, including a 13-year-old student in Hong Kong who has practiced on a piano installed in a subdivided flat that partly blocks entrances to the kitchen and bathroom, according to SCMP Economy.

The event is organized by SoCO, described as one of the city’s largest concern groups for the underprivileged, and is aimed at raising funds to fight poverty, including by supporting children who lack resources to develop their interests.

SoCO said more than 200,000 children in Hong Kong may be living in poverty, based on the estimate that their families’ incomes fall below half of the median household level.

The group also estimated that about 50,000 Hongkongers under age 18 live in subdivided flats, framing the concert as a way to spotlight the hardship facing children in cramped housing conditions.
