Hong Kong police arrest 57 in triad-linked illegal debt ring crackdown
The operation targeted a syndicate that used messaging apps to subcontract debt collection work for fees of HK$500 to HK$800.
Hong Kong police said they have arrested 57 people, including a 14-year-old boy, as part of a crackdown on a triad-linked illegal debt collection operation.
According to SCMP Economy, the police operation, launched last month, dismantled an illegal debt collection syndicate along with a prostitution venue, a drug den and three illegal gambling parlours. Officers said detainees were aged 14 to 70, and some had triad backgrounds.
Investigators said they identified the syndicate through an investigation, intelligence analysis and a review of surveillance footage. The probe found the group recruited young people seeking “quick cash” to collect debts through messaging apps and everyday social settings.
Police added that once members obtained debt collection orders through online groups or referrals, core participants used messaging groups to subcontract the work to recruits for HK$500 to HK$800, with alleged tactics including splashing red paint and making harassing phone calls or threats via WhatsApp.
