Romantic and NSFW AI companion apps pulled in $427.3 million since 2022
Appfigures Intelligence data shows 214 apps drew 165.3 million downloads worldwide, with $162.8 million spent in the first half of 2026 alone.
Romantic and NSFW AI companion apps have generated $427.3 million in worldwide consumer spending since ChatGPT’s launch in late 2022, analytics firm Appfigures Intelligence says, citing data provided to Decrypt.
The category includes 214 apps that have been downloaded more than 165 million times. Appfigures Intelligence also reports 165.3 million downloads and notes that the figures reflect gross consumer spending before Apple and Google take platform fees, which are typically 30%.
In the first half of 2026, users spent $162.8 million on romantic AI companions. Decrypt reports that Zeta led the category by gross revenue during that period with $33.0 million, followed by Tipsy Chat: Live Your Story at $15.2 million, ChatBox: AI Chat Bot Assistant at $13.0 million, and Crushie AI: Chat & Companion at $8.8 million.
On downloads, Emochi was the top romantic AI companion app with 7.9 million installs in the first half of 2026. Decrypt also cites a May 2026 study that found 15% of partnered U.S. adults ages 18 to 30 regularly used AI romantic companions, with 69% of regular users saying they hid the extent of their use.
