Houthis fire missiles at Saudi Arabia, ending a four-year truce

Saudi Arabia intercepted the missiles aimed at Abha, raising the risk of renewed cross-border attacks near the oil and Red Sea export route.

Yemen’s Houthis fired missiles at Saudi Arabia on Monday, according to Reuters, after accusing the kingdom of bombing an airport under their control and breaking an informal four-year truce in the conflict.

Saudi Arabia intercepted missiles launched toward its southern region, and Houthi officials said they targeted Abha’s international airport, a city in the mountainous south where many Saudis go to escape summer heat.

The attack is the first claimed by the Houthis against Saudi Arabia since an informal truce began in March 2022, following Houthi attacks on Saudi energy infrastructure.

Reuters also noted that a wider conflict with the Houthis could threaten Saudi Arabia’s ability to export oil via a Red Sea route that includes a pipeline connecting the east to the west coast, which can bypass the Strait of Hormuz.
