Turkey becomes ASEAN dialogue partner, targeting higher regional trade

Turkey said it has more than doubled trade with ASEAN since 2010, raising it from US$6.5 billion to US$16 billion.

Turkey has been upgraded to an ASEAN dialogue partner status, a move analysts described as part of Ankara’s effort to position itself as a middle power, according to SCMP Economy.

The status change was approved on July 21, breaking an ASEAN moratorium on new dialogue partners that had been in place since the UK’s admission in 2021. Turkey will join other dialogue-partner governments including the US, China, Russia, Britain, Australia, Japan and South Korea.

Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said Ankara has increased cooperation with ASEAN members and lifted trade volume from US$6.5 billion to US$16 billion since laying the foundation for institutional relations with ASEAN in 2010.

Fidan added that Turkey expects political and economic cooperation with the ASEAN region, home to around 700 million people and an economy exceeding US$4 trillion, to deepen further. Turkey’s engagement with ASEAN began with the 2010 Treaty of Amity and Cooperation, followed by sectoral dialogue partner status in 2017.
