Global favorability for China rises as US image declines in Pew survey
Pew found China’s favorability averaging 46.0% across 20 consistently tracked countries, versus 36.0% for the US, reversing the 2023 lead for the US.
China’s global image has improved since the COVID-19 era, and international views of President Xi Jinping have risen as perceptions of the United States decline, according to a new Pew Research Centre survey reported by the South China Morning Post.
The survey, conducted between February and May, polled more than 45,000 people across 37 countries. It found that views of China, which were at or near historic lows in many countries during the pandemic, have increased steadily, while sentiment toward the US has fallen, including the share of respondents who say the US is a reliable partner.
Across 20 countries Pew has tracked consistently over time, China now has a higher average favorability rating than the US, with 46.0% of respondents expressing a favorable view of China compared with 36.0% for the US. In 2023, the US had been more favorably viewed than China, with 54.0% viewing the US positively versus 19.0% who favored China.
Pew said the survey’s results came during a period when the US was becoming increasingly entangled in the conflict with Iran and other regional crises, according to the SCMP Economy article. South China Morning Post also quoted Pew research associate Jonathan Schulman on the differing trends in perceptions of China and the US.
