World Bank urges developing economies to adopt lower cost AI tools
The World Bank said advanced AI models require large data centers and heavy computing power, with climate implications, while urging cheaper tools tailored to local conditions.
The World Bank urged developing countries to adopt artificial intelligence technology tools to improve governance outcomes, warning they risked falling behind if they did not act, according to commentary tied to its annual World Development Report.
Indermit Gill, the World Bank Group’s chief economist, said developing economies can benefit without building large models or data centers, advocating for adaptation of lower cost AI tools to local conditions.
The World Bank noted that many advanced AI models, largely developed in the United States and China, rely on substantial computing power and large data centers that consume significant electricity and water, raising climate change concerns.
The organization also cited a weak growth backdrop, saying developing economies are experiencing their weakest average growth performance in three decades.
