China laboratory monkey prices rebound toward Covid-era highs

Suppliers are generally quoting about 180,000 yuan, or $27,000, per animal, and some labs are being forced to pause studies because monkeys are often pre-booked.

A boom in China’s new drug research and development is pushing laboratory monkey prices back toward coronavirus-era highs, according to reporting by SCMP Economy.

The outlet cited research by Guo Xiangyu, a scientist at Jinan University in Guangzhou who develops non-human primate models for major brain diseases. Suppliers are now generally quoting about 180,000 yuan, or US$27,000, per animal, and researchers say many monkeys cannot be purchased because suppliers have been fully pre-booked.

Guo said the supply constraints are affecting study timelines, not just costs. His laboratory requires between 30 and 50 monkeys each year for scientific work that includes pathological and molecular biological analyses.

In many cases, the lack of available animals is forcing researchers to halt parts of their work, as demand rises alongside China’s drug R and D push.
