Chinese university revokes professor title over alleged plagiarism

Northwest University said its investigation found plagiarism in nine papers and ended her teaching appointment.

SCMP Economy reports that Northwest University concluded a months-long review into Jia Qianqian, the daughter of writer Jia Pingwa, and confirmed allegations of plagiarism. The university said nine of her published papers included plagiarised material.

According to the university statement, Northwest University terminated Jia’s teaching appointment and revoked her associate professor title. It also said her 2009 master’s degree was revoked after Shaanxi Normal University reviewed her thesis and found plagiarism.

The report notes that the issue comes as Chinese President Xi Jinping called on July 8 for stronger efforts to crack down on academic misconduct during a meeting in Beijing.

The outlet added that improving China’s ability to innovate is described as a cornerstone of the government’s economic strategy.
