Huanggang Port upgrade bill expected to pass this week
Hong Kong lawmakers expect a Huanggang Port Hong Kong Port Area Bill to clear this week, after the upgrade introduces a joint inspection clearance model for cross border travel.
Authorities in Hong Kong are urging stronger promotion of the upgraded Huanggang Port checkpoint crossing arrangements for travellers between Hong Kong and Shenzhen, as concerns remain about how the changes will be communicated after the facility opens, according to SCMP Economy.
The push comes after the Hong Kong government tabled the Huanggang Port Hong Kong Port Area Bill in the Legislative Council, with Ben Chan Han-pan, chairman of the legislature’s transport panel, saying the bill was expected to be passed this week, helped by additional meetings.
Chan said the upgrade will use a “joint inspection” model for clearance, allowing travellers to complete immigration procedures on both sides of the border in one go. He also dismissed worries that the bill could be rushed, saying lawmakers will have time to raise questions and understand the proposal.
SCMP Economy reports Chan added that, in addition to promoting the new process, authorities should ensure the site has sufficient parking for buses and clearly explain the detailed border crossing arrangement to residents once the facility begins operating.
