US retail sales rise 0.2% in June as consumer spending stays resilient
Retail and food services sales totaled USD 768.6 billion in June, while sales excluding motor vehicles fell 0.2% month over month.
US retail and food services sales increased modestly in June, supporting the view that consumer spending has remained firm despite elevated interest rates and uncertainty tied to energy prices, according to Action Forex.
The US Census Bureau reported that retail and food services sales rose 0.2% month over month in June to USD 768.6 billion, matching market expectations. May’s gain was revised higher to 1.0% from 0.9%, strengthening the picture for the start of the second quarter.
On a broader basis, retail sales were 6.7% higher than a year earlier, and total sales for the April to June period rose 6.4% versus the same period in 2025.
Within the details, June’s monthly increase moderated from May but still extended the streak of positive consumer spending. Sales excluding motor vehicles and parts declined 0.2% month over month, while sales excluding gasoline stations rose 0.7%, indicating underlying demand stayed resilient even as fuel prices fluctuated.
