Chemical tanker Asana seized off Yemen coast in suspected Somali piracy
The tanker was boarded while transiting east in the Gulf of Aden, about 65 nautical miles south of Yemen’s Al Mukalla, and its next port was listed as Bosaso in Somalia.
Armed assailants boarded the chemical tanker Asana off southern Yemen in the Gulf of Aden on Friday and took control of the vessel, according to maritime security sources cited by SCMP Economy and Reuters.
Initial assessments indicated the incident was linked to Somali piracy rather than Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi militia. Ship tracking data showed the vessel had no confirmed flag and listed Somalia’s Bosaso as its next destination.
UKMTO said the tanker was boarded by unauthorised personnel while transiting east in the Gulf of Aden, 65 nautical miles south of Yemen’s Al Mukalla port. Maritime risk management group Vanguard said key details, including the number of assailants and the status of the crew, remain unclear.
The European Union’s Aspides naval mission, active in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden region, said efforts were under way to assist the Asana tanker and determine what happened. A South Korean warship was also in the area, an EU official said.
