China confirms deaths of coast guard personnel in Scarborough Shoal collision
State media said two officers died in a South China Sea vessel collision during a maritime rights operation on August 11, 2025.
China has officially confirmed fatalities tied to a vessel collision in the South China Sea during a Philippine ship chase near Scarborough Shoal, according to state media and China’s official martyr registry, with the confirmation reported by SCMP Economy.
The People’s Armed Police announced posthumous honors for two China Coast Guard officers, Yi Xinyu and Cheng Long, who died during a “maritime rights protection operation in the South China Sea” on August 11, 2025.
SCMP Economy reported that the collision heavily damaged the bow of the Chinese coastguard vessel, and that there had been earlier speculation about deaths aboard the ship before Beijing acknowledged fatalities.
Public martyr registry records cited by SCMP Economy state that Yi was 21 and Cheng was 25, and both were posthumously awarded first-class merit citations described as among China’s highest honors for exceptional military and paramilitary service.
