China tests long-range submarine-launched ballistic missile
The July 6 launch reportedly traveled about 7,300 km, and analysts said it supports Beijing’s push toward a second-strike capability.
China conducted a long-range submarine-launched ballistic missile test on July 6, firing the missile from a nuclear-powered submarine and joining a group of countries that also include the United States, Russia, Britain and France.
According to SCMP Economy, analysts believe the missile was launched from China’s Type 094 Jin-class nuclear-powered submarine armed with ballistic missiles, a platform associated with second-strike capability and viewed as a key element of nuclear deterrence.
The outlet said the missile traveled about 7,300 km and was the first publicly disclosed long-range submarine-based test by the PLA Navy since 1982, signaling both the credibility of China’s developing undersea deterrent and Beijing’s resolve to pursue it.
SCMP Economy added that underwater nuclear propulsion has altered deterrence dynamics, with advances and historical crises shaping broader strategy around maintaining stability through second-strike survivability.
