China warns of retaliation after US limits student and exchange visas
The new rules, tied to a White House immigration crackdown, cap student and cultural exchange visas at four years and heighten uncertainty for Chinese students already in the US.
China on Friday criticized new US visa regulations that it said target students and journalists in a discriminatory way, and it warned it could respond with reciprocal countermeasures, according to SCMP Economy.
The changes were announced by the US Department of Homeland Security on Thursday as part of a White House crackdown on both legal and illegal immigration. Under the new regulations, student and cultural exchange visas would be limited to a maximum of four years.
China’s foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said the restrictions on people-to-people exchanges do not serve anyone’s interest, and that China firmly rejects the move while reserving the right to respond.
The update has also raised concerns among Chinese students, including one prospective PhD student in computer science who said the new rules have left him facing a dilemma, the outlet reported.
