Equipment breakdown reinsurance needs engineering depth as risks evolve

A Travelers white paper says networked systems can turn a single event into cascading failures, pushing carriers to rethink reinsurance structures.

Risk & Insurance, citing a Travelers white paper, said the equipment breakdown reinsurance market is at an inflection point as aging infrastructure, accelerating automation, and digitally connected systems change how equipment breakdown losses originate and spread.

The material describes how scenarios that used to be discrete now can escalate across networked operations, including power surges triggering cascading failures, controls malfunctions stopping automated facilities quickly, and refrigeration problems compounding into spoilage and business interruption claims.

It added that, beyond providing capacity, the right equipment breakdown reinsurer should offer technical depth, engineering integration, flexible program structures, and long term support so carriers can assess and manage increasingly interconnected risks as they evolve.

The white paper also highlighted that technical insight matters at the negotiating table, noting that reinsurers can help insurers manage factors such as runaway legal settlement costs and support stronger defenses.
