Hong Kong fire inquiry to deliver 600-page closing statement
The Wang Fuk Court blaze on Nov. 26, 2025 killed 168 people and displaced nearly 5,000 residents during a HK$336 million renovation.
Hong Kong’s independent panel investigating the city’s deadliest fire in decades will deliver closing remarks at the final public inquiry session on Friday, including a 600-page statement that is expected to address the fire’s causes and the responsibilities of the parties involved, according to SCMP Economy.
The blaze at Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po broke out on Nov. 26, 2025, killing 168 people and displacing nearly 5,000 residents, while the estate was undergoing a HK$336 million renovation project at the time.
In Thursday testimony, Jenkin Suen SC delivered the government’s closing statement, denying direct responsibility for the fire and saying private stakeholders bore primary blame.
Suen said the renovation contractor, Prestige Construction and Engineering, along with consultant Will Power Architects and its registered inspector, Wilson Ng Yeuk, abused the regulatory mechanism, which the statement said directly led to the outbreak of the fire.
