Hong Kong legislature approves Huanggang co-location plan

The bill is aimed at cutting customs clearance times at the upgraded Huanggang crossing from 30 minutes to five minutes, Hong Kong’s security chief said.

Hong Kong’s legislature has passed a bill that creates the legal basis for implementing a co-location arrangement at the upgraded Huanggang border crossing, following a special meeting that lasted about four hours, according to SCMP Economy.

The Huanggang Port Hong Kong Port Area Bill was gazetted on Tuesday and includes a July 31 approval deadline cited by Hong Kong’s Secretary for Security Chris Tang Ping-keung.

Tang said rebuilding the Huanggang Control Port would help Hong Kong align with the country’s 15th five-year plan, and he added that the policy is intended to reduce overall customs clearance times from 30 minutes to five minutes.

SCMP Economy reported that Legco had planned to hold its final meeting before the summer break on Wednesday but held additional sessions to expedite the vote, with Tang thanking lawmakers for moving the timetable.
