Housing starts rebound in June after May's multifamily slump
Privately owned housing starts rose 19.0% to a 1.427 million annual rate, while building permits fell 3.0% to 1.367 million.
Residential construction regained momentum in June as housing starts and completions recovered from unusually weak levels in May, according to latest U.S. Census Bureau data cited by Mortgage News Daily.
Privately owned housing starts jumped 19.0% to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.427 million, reversing much of May's decline and placing the June pace 3.5% above the June 2025 level. Mortgage News Daily reports the gain was driven almost entirely by multifamily activity, with starts for buildings containing five units or more rising to 513k.
Single-family starts were essentially flat, edging down 0.2% to 895k. At the same time, building permits continued to trend lower, falling 3.0% to an annual rate of 1.367 million, with single-family authorizations down 2.4% to 871k and multifamily permits at 445k.
Completions also improved in June, rising 3.3% to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.392 million. Mortgage News Daily says single-family completions increased 6.6% to 964k, while completions for buildings with five units or more reached 413k.
