Malaysia probes Network School amid claims over foreign tech community

Johor authorities are investigating Network School in Forest City after allegations that Israelis entered Malaysia using secondary passports, raising concerns about how immigration scrutiny could affect the country’s appeal to global remote workers.

A controversy in Malaysia over a foreign tech community in Johor state has prompted an investigation into Network School, a private co-living and co-working project based in Forest City, according to SCMP Economy.

Johor authorities are looking into online allegations that Israelis were involved in the project and entered Malaysia using secondary passports. The probe has also drawn attention to whether immigration scrutiny and political sensitivities could complicate Malaysia’s efforts to attract digital nomads and other global talent.

A Malaysian digital nomad, Harinder Singh, said the episode is unlikely to deter remote workers from considering Malaysia, focusing instead on practical factors like affordability, connectivity, and how clearly the country communicates its rules. He added that digital nomads typically do not make decisions based on short-term news cycles.
