UK hedge funds expand short selling to larger firms, White & Case says
Short-selling activity in UK-listed companies hit record levels in the first half of 2026, as hedge funds increased their use of shorts, according to research cited by law firm White & Case.
Hedgeweek reports that the shift includes hedge funds targeting larger firms, extending beyond the small-cap stocks that had previously drawn outsized short interest.
The research also points to diversification across sectors, with short positions building up across multiple areas of the UK market during the period.
