Malaysia says it will not interfere in MMC Port management after new chief

Transport minister Anthony Loke said the state regulates concession-linked shareholding, including a 51% Malaysian ownership policy.

Malaysia’s transport minister said the government cannot intervene in how companies run their operations, after appointing Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem to lead MMC Port Holdings, the country’s largest port operator.

Anthony Loke said Malaysia regulates shareholding structures for firms operating concessions and strategic national assets, including ports, and that such companies must be majority owned by Malaysians at 51%, but that the government does not interfere in management.

MMC Port operates seven ports along or near the Strait of Malacca, a shipping route critical to global trade, and it is wholly owned by utilities and infrastructure group MMC Corporation, whose shareholding details were described as not publicly available.

The Reuters story also notes that Sultan Ahmed quit as chief of Dubai-based DP World in February amid scrutiny over alleged ties to Jeffrey Epstein, whose emails were released by the US Justice Department, and that Sultan Ahmed had not publicly commented on those emails when contacted by the outlet.
