Moonshot AI releases Kimi K3, a 2.8T open-weight model
Kimi K3 arrives with pricing matching Claude Sonnet 5 and its full model weights are scheduled to be released under a modified MIT license on July 27.
Moonshot AI has released Kimi K3, a 2.8-trillion-parameter open-weight AI model, on July 16, positioning it as one of the largest freely available models ever made public. The release said K3 is designed to outperform US labs on certain specialized benchmarks.
In benchmark results highlighted by Decrypt, Kimi K3 scored 2,840 on a writing benchmark that grades generated scripts using an Elo system, ahead of Claude Fable 5 at 2,760. The model also claimed the top spot on Arena AI’s Frontend Code Leaderboard, scoring 1,679 versus Fable 5’s 1,631, with first place in six of seven frontend domains.
Decrypt also described K3’s pricing as identical to Claude Sonnet 5, at $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens. The outlet added that the full model weights, intended to let users run, fine-tune, or build on the model locally, are set to drop by July 27 under a modified MIT license, making K3 the largest freely available AI model in history.
