Russian activist Ilya Remeslo arrested after denouncing Putin
Prosecutors accuse him of spreading fakes about the Russian army, a charge that carries a maximum penalty of up to 10 years in prison.
A Russian activist who previously targeted Kremlin opponents and later turned against President Vladimir Putin has been arrested in connection with his comments about the war in Ukraine, state media said, according to Agence France Presse as carried by SCMP Economy.
Ilya Remeslo, 42, faces charges of “spreading fakes on the Russian army” under censorship laws Moscow introduced after it sent troops to Ukraine, and the charge carries a maximum penalty of up to 10 years in prison, TASS reported.
Sergei Badamshin, identified by independent media as Remeslo’s lawyer, said on social media that Remeslo was being transported to Moscow to face court.
Earlier this year, Remeslo published a “manifesto” against Putin and called for the leader to be put on trial, and after that he was reportedly sent to a psychiatric hospital in an episode compared to Soviet-era forced hospitalization.
