Trump accuses China of election data theft amid fresh diplomatic strain
Trump said Beijing stole 220 million US voter files, a charge China rejected as “unfounded smears.”
US President Donald Trump launched a sharp attack on China late Thursday Washington time, accusing Beijing of interfering in US elections and straining a fragile thaw in ties.
In a prime-time White House address lasting nearly 30 minutes, Trump alleged China orchestrated what he called the largest compromise of election data in history, and claimed Beijing stole 220 million US voter files including names, addresses, phone numbers, and political party preferences.
Trump also accused US intelligence agencies of downplaying the scale of China’s meddling.
According to SCMP Economy, China’s foreign ministry spokesman Lin Jian urged Washington to reconsider its actions, stop what he described as unfounded smears, and do more to benefit China-US relations.
