Trump says U.S. will add pollution costs to tariffs on Canadian goods
He linked the move to wildfire smoke that, according to coverage, blanketed parts of the U.S. from the Midwest to the Northeast and prompted residents to stay indoors.
CNBC Markets reports that U.S. President Donald Trump blamed Canada for wildfire smoke spreading into the United States and said the U.S. would add an additional pollution-related cost to existing tariffs on Canadian goods.
According to the outlet, smoke from active wildfires in Canada has contributed to unhealthy air quality across swaths of the U.S., with potential disruptions cited for events including the World Cup final in New Jersey.
The SCMP Economy also reported that Trump said the cost of addressing the pollution would be “incalculable,” and that heavy smoke from hundreds of Canadian fires affected areas stretching from the Midwest to the Northeast.
Both reports point to guidance for residents to stay indoors as the smoke moved through the U.S., while the tariff approach is tied directly to the cross-border air quality impact described in the coverage.
