Trump threatens added Canadian tariffs over wildfire smoke
A pair of Minnesota wildfires have spread into Ontario, underscoring how cross-border air pollution is becoming a trade issue for the US.
Trump said he plans to add to Canadian tariffs, linking the move to wildfire smoke he attributes to Canada not adequately maintaining its forests and brush, Forexlive reported.
The outlet said two Minnesota fires have crossed into Canada, with Ontario affected by the Bear Trap Fire in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, and the Thumb Fire, which it described as having also moved into Canada.
Forexlive added that the Bear Trap Fire had grown to 34,422 acres, while the Thumb Fire was at 15,300+ acres, as the situation escalated across the border.
The report framed the comments as part of a broader effort to press Canada over environmental conditions, despite noting that much of northern Canada is sparsely populated.
