PureCycle alliance targets 2027 launch for recycled BOPP films in Japan
The companies have completed pilot-scale production runs and plan a formal commercial agreement in 2027, with shipments to follow after import regulatory requirements are met.
PureCycle Technologies has partnered with RM Tohcello and Mitsui & Co to supply recycled polypropylene-based materials for BOPP film customers in Japan, aiming for a commercial launch in 2027, according to Yahoo Finance. The collaboration began in the first quarter of 2023, when RM Tohcello tested early samples of PureFive resin provided by PureCycle and Mitsui. Those trials progressed to pilot-scale production runs, which the companies say are now complete.
Biaxially oriented polypropylene, or BOPP, film is used in food packaging, labels, and other consumer products. RM Tohcello executives said flexible films are a fast growing packaging segment and they expect the recycled-content solution to support use in BOPP film and PP sealant film.
PureCycle said mechanically recycled polypropylene has generally not met the quality standards needed for these applications, limiting recycled content in that part of the packaging market. The company described its dissolution recycling process as removing additives, colors, odors, and other contaminants from post-consumer polypropylene waste, and expects materials to be introduced to customers in Japan ahead of the planned 2027 commercial agreement.
