US and Iran strikes expand to infrastructure, raising escalation fears
The renewed fighting has disrupted Gulf energy supplies, prompting US Marines to board a tanker near the Strait of Hormuz and armed men to seize another vessel off Yemen.
The United States struck infrastructure in Iran and Tehran retaliated by targeting facilities in Kuwait, as both sides expanded their attacks beyond military targets and heightened fears of further escalation, Reuters reported. The reports said the US strikes hit bridges in Iran, while Iran’s response included hitting a power and desalination plant in Kuwait on Friday. Reuters also noted that Washington and Tehran have been testing escalation since a ceasefire agreement collapsed last week. At sea, Reuters said the renewed conflict has again cut off energy supplies from the Gulf, with US Marines boarding a tanker near the Strait of Hormuz. Separate reports also described armed men seizing another vessel off Yemen, raising concerns about security at the Red Sea’s shipping chokepoint. Iran’s semi-official Tasnim agency reported that the Revolutionary Guards navy “targeted” a Thai-flagged ship attempting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, without providing further details, Reuters said. US President Donald Trump has threatened broad-based air strikes on Iran’s infrastructure and has not ruled out a ground assault on Iran’s coast or islands, according to Reuters.
