Xi urges secure, inclusive AI and warns against AI ‘securitisation’

Xi said countries should avoid overstretching national security concepts in AI, amid rising export controls and other limits on access to advanced technology.

Chinese President Xi Jinping warned against creating “new historical injustices” in the artificial intelligence era as he called for broader support of AI adoption in the Global South, and urged a more open, inclusive approach to how the technology is developed.

At the opening ceremony of China’s largest annual AI industry event, the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai, Xi also urged countries to strengthen risk awareness and ensure AI is “secure and controllable.”

Xi cautioned against securitising AI and said countries should jointly oppose overstretching national security concepts in the field of AI or placing one country’s security above that of others.

The remarks came as access to advanced AI capabilities is increasingly constrained by export controls and corporate blacklists, according to SCMP Economy.
