Alibaba chip unit T-Head open-sources SAIL AI software stack

The open-source push is aimed at making it easier for international developers to adopt its hardware, with T-Head saying developers can adapt the SAIL stack to mainstream AI frameworks in under seven days.

Alibaba Group Holding’s chip design unit, T-Head, said it will open-source its proprietary AI software stack, called SAIL, in a move meant to streamline developer operations and offer an alternative to Nvidia’s CUDA ecosystem. SCMP Economy reports that Nvidia’s specialized software is widely relied on by AI programmers, effectively tying many users to Nvidia hardware.

The company framed the initiative as part of a broader effort by Chinese technology firms to increase self-sufficiency amid the US-China tech rivalry. SCMP Economy notes that in 2025, Huawei took a similar step by open-sourcing CANN, the software platform used to build applications for its Ascend AI processors.

T-Head said its open-source initiative is intended to lower the barrier for international developers who want to use its hardware. According to the report, the unit said programmers could adapt the SAIL stack to mainstream AI frameworks in less than seven days.
