Amazon aims for harder enforcement of AI staffing rules

Internal documents cited by Business Insider say early pilots relied heavily on manual overrides, while Amazon is moving toward system-enforced guardrails.

Amazon has begun rolling out workplace AI tools in some facilities to help manage staffing, but internal documents described by Business Insider indicate the early pilot phase saw frequent human intervention, including managers ignoring suggestions or shutting down parts of the system.

The documents also describe issues with getting managers to follow algorithmic guidance, saying training and best practices were proving insufficient and that the impacts of the new tech were difficult to measure because management was not consistently following recommendations.

One internal memo quoted in the reporting argued that without system enforced guardrails, manual overrides and established habits can erode even the best approach, and it identified “hard” enforcement as a primary objective for this year.

Amazon disputes the completeness of the leaked material, with a spokesperson telling Moneywise that the files reflect an incomplete picture of the company’s plans and the multiple phases the features will go through.
