Asian-American groups warn of backlash risks from Trump election claims
The groups criticized Trump’s repeated allegations of Beijing election interference as disputed, warning the rhetoric could intensify hostility toward US minority communities already facing attacks.
Asian-American groups have condemned US President Donald Trump’s latest election-related remarks as a dangerous threat to minority communities, saying the speech builds on a tense period marked by attacks and hostility, according to SCMP Economy.
In a prime-time address from the White House, Trump repeated claims that Beijing was interfering in US elections, including references to “China’s sinister election meddling” and the “largest compromise of election data in history,” while analysts told SCMP Economy that much of the cited voter registration information in previously classified reports is disputed and not new.
SCMP Economy reports that China’s foreign ministry dismissed the comments as factually wrong and aimed at vilifying China, while Chinese-American groups said the conspiracy framing could worsen an already tense domestic environment.
Joanna Yang Qing Derman, civil rights and national security director with civic group Asian-American Advancing Justice, said to SCMP Economy that the remarks amount to an extension of racism and xenophobic behavior, adding that the stance could further inflame prejudice.
