Hong Kong rolls out first wave of pet-friendly dining permits for dogs

The Food and Environment Hygiene Department granted 1,000 permits by lottery in June, bringing participating restaurants to 971 as of Friday.

Hong Kong has launched its first wave of pet-friendly restaurants for dog owners, with 940 restaurants beginning to allow dogs on July 9, according to SCMP Economy.

While many owners welcomed the move, some businesses pulled out days later, citing a need for more time to prepare, leaving participation at 971 restaurants as of Friday.

The department said a restaurant in Tsuen Wan was prosecuted for allowing dogs without the required permit, the first legal action since the scheme began.

An owner with a bichon frise said booking difficulties arose soon after the launch, including when she tried to reserve at Jade Garden in Yuen Long for a family birthday on the first day of the program.
