India’s first private orbital rocket completes maiden launch
Skyroot Aerospace’s Vikram-1 test flight carried small satellites to low-Earth orbit and reached a payload capacity of up to 350 kg.
India’s first privately built orbital rocket, Vikram-1, completed its maiden flight, according to SCMP Economy citing the company behind the launch.
The rocket, developed by Skyroot Aerospace, lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota and was designed to carry small satellite payloads into low-Earth orbit.
Vikram-1 is about as tall as a seven-storey building and can carry payloads weighing up to 350 kg, the outlet reported.
SCMP Economy said Skyroot Aerospace described the test flight as a successful completion, with Indian officials including Pawan Goenka and Prime Minister Narendra Modi calling it a significant milestone for the country’s private space sector.
