Water supply disrupted for about 10,000 homes in Shau Kei Wan
Hong Kong’s Water Supplies Department estimated service will resume at 6:00am Monday after an 18-inch pipe leak near a busy tram intersection.
About 10,000 homes in Hong Kong’s Eastern district are facing a 24-hour fresh water disruption after a sudden pipe burst in Shau Kei Wan, the South China Morning Post reports. The Water Supplies Department received reports of the disruption at around 6:00am on Sunday and deployed staff to investigate, issuing a suspension notice that estimated water supply would resume at 6:00am Monday.
The affected areas include Tung Yuk Court, Yiu Tung Estate, Ming Wah Dai Ha, Perfect Mount Gardens, Ngoi Man Street, Factory Street, Kam Wa Street, Shau Kei Wan Main Street East, Shau Kei Wan Road, and Sai Wan Ho Street, according to the report.
Speaking to the press at 4:00pm, chief engineer Lin Tang-tai said the leak occurred in an 18-inch-diameter pipe at a busy tram intersection. He said technicians used pipeline robots and advanced leak detection technologies to identify the exact location, and added that the leaked water did not flood the road surface.
Lin said the water may have flowed into the sea through underground stormwater drains, which increased the technical difficulty of the repairs, while the department coordinated with transport authorities and police to divert traffic during excavation work.
