China approves Apple Intelligence, enabling launch with Alibaba support

Yahoo Finance says China approval allows Apple Intelligence to use Alibaba's Qwen model and potentially strengthens the iPhone upgrade cycle, with Apple shares recently surging after the news.

Apple has received regulatory approval in China for the launch of Apple Intelligence, clearing a key hurdle that had delayed the company’s AI rollout in the country, according to Yahoo Finance. The approval enables Apple to bring its AI features to China through a partnership with Alibaba Group Holding Limited.

The Chinese version of Apple Intelligence will integrate Alibaba’s Qwen large language model, while Baidu will also support certain localized AI capabilities to comply with China’s AI regulations. The timing for the commercial rollout remains uncertain, but the green light marks a meaningful step toward expanding Apple’s AI ecosystem in a major market.

Yahoo Finance added that approval could matter beyond a routine product update because China is one of Apple’s most important regions amid intensifying competition from domestic smartphone makers. The report also said the development could serve as a new catalyst for iPhone upgrade activity and related services growth, even as iPhone demand has faced pressure in recent years.

The outlet cited recent market performance for Apple, including 58.6% gains over the past 52 weeks, 22.6% year-to-date progress, and a new high of $328.73 on July 15. It also noted Apple shares jumped about 4% in a single session following reports of regulator approval for Apple Intelligence in China.
