John Healey named UK chancellor after resigning as defence secretary

John Healey has been appointed UK Chancellor of the Exchequer after resigning just over a month earlier as defence secretary, a move that came days before Andy Burnham’s by-election in Makerfield, according to BBC Business.

The BBC says Healey had assessed the government’s much-delayed defence investment plan as falling well short of what is required for defence and the country at a dangerous time, and it adds that his resignation shortly followed a clash with Chancellor Rachel Reeves.

Healey now replaces Reeves in the Treasury role, giving him responsibility for funding across every arm of government, the outlet reports.

BBC Business also says Healey had told colleagues, in his resignation letter, that the Treasury was unwilling to commit the resources the nation needs to defend the country amid rising threats, and it reports that Burnham and Healey share similar outlooks on priorities such as reindustrialisation and driving growth.
