Justice Department opens compliance review into Harvard financial aid

The US Justice Department has opened a compliance review into Harvard University, looking into whether some of the school’s financial aid programs are discriminatory, according to the department.

In a statement, the Civil Rights Division said it will determine whether Harvard’s China-based financial aid programs and practices exclude American-citizen students. Harvard did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The university has previously said it does not allow discriminatory policies and has characterized related investigations from the Trump administration as retaliatory actions.

The Justice Department move is part of a wider set of actions by the Trump administration, including investigations and threats of federal funding suspension involving Harvard and other top universities, with a broader deal to resolve the investigations still elusive, Reuters reported.
