UK appoints John Healey as Chancellor of the Exchequer
Sterling is rebounding after the appointment, following a prior dip below the 200-hour moving average near 1.3424.
John Healey has been announced as the new UK Chancellor of the Exchequer, a surprise selection after Shabana Mahmood had been widely viewed as the favorite. Forexlive notes Healey brings direct Treasury experience, including roles as Economic Secretary and Financial Secretary in earlier administrations, and he previously served as Defence Secretary until resigning on 11 June 2026.
The appointment is expected to shift the tone of fiscal policy toward a more interventionist, spending-oriented approach, according to Forexlive. The outlet points to early policy signals tied to the new leadership agenda, including cost of living measures starting the next day, steps aimed at ending rough sleeping, and more council homes, alongside a focus on reindustrialization.
Markets will be watching fiscal credibility, Forexlive says, after UK government bond yields moved sharply higher following Reeves’s departure. The change has prompted investors to reassess the future direction of fiscal policy, with the immediate question for Healey centered on whether existing fiscal rules are kept or loosened, and how soon a Budget or emergency statement is delivered.
In FX trading, Forexlive reports the GBPUSD is bouncing modestly after falling below the 200-hour moving average around 1.34243. The pair recently hit a low near 1.3414, and the current level is around 1.34296.
