Aztec launches Alpha V5 on mainnet, cutting private proof times

Aztec says Alpha V5 can prove fully private transactions in about 2.5 seconds on a consumer laptop and lowers fees to under $0.05.

Aztec has launched its Alpha V5 privacy Layer 2 on Ethereum mainnet, pitching faster private transaction proving and lower transaction fees compared with its prior version. The company says Alpha V5 can prove a fully private transaction in about 2.5 seconds on a laptop and cuts transaction fees to under $0.05, with the figures framed as improvements over Alpha V4.

According to The Defiant, Aztec’s proving approach generates cryptographic proofs on a user’s own device rather than sending them to a server that could see the transaction. The company also said the release resolves critical issues from V4 and pointed to testing via a Cantina bug bounty involving 234 plus researchers, though the performance and cost metrics are self reported and not independently benchmarked.

The launch follows Aztec’s alpha network and public testnet, moving earlier performance and cost claims onto mainnet. Aztec said usable apps would begin rolling out this week, starting with Nyx, a wallet that connects an existing Ethereum wallet for private transfers on Ethereum and private yield on the lending protocol Aave. Nyx is typically invite only, but Aztec said access is open to everyone for 24 hours.

Aztec has not published a reproducible benchmark for its proving time or fee claims, and it did not specify how many other live apps will follow Nyx. In the announcement thread, the account said more apps are rolling out very soon.
