Crypto Clarity Act faces new ethics enforcement fight in the Senate
Democrats and the White House are divided over whether state attorneys general or the U.S. attorney general would enforce the bill's bans on significant crypto ties by government officials.
The U.S. Senate is still working through unresolved issues in the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, with Democrats signaling continued concern over how the bill would be enforced for government officials, according to CoinDesk.
CoinDesk reports that while President Donald Trump has agreed to broad restrictions for federal officials, including himself, the vice president and members of Congress, the central dispute is who would police the prohibition on significant crypto ties. A White House official briefing to industry insiders on Tuesday highlighted that Democrats want state attorneys general to be able to enforce the ethics restrictions, while the White House and Republicans prefer the U.S. attorney general as the top authority.
The compromise on this enforcement point, sources cited by CoinDesk say, is viewed as a key prerequisite for the bill to move ahead, even as other provisions remain unfinished, including how the legislation would handle developers under illicit-finance safeguards.
CoinDesk also notes that August 7, the final day before the Senate's summer recess, is seen as a major deadline, with crypto insiders expecting the legislation to reach the Senate floor early next week if negotiators can close the ethics enforcement gap.
