Malaysia PM Anwar sets new rule for ministers ahead of state election
Anwar said senior officials can campaign but must resign their posts if they use public office to attack coalition partners, including leaders in agencies such as Fleda and Risda.
Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has warned that ministers and federal appointees who use public office to target their own unity government partners must step down, drawing a new red line as campaigning intensifies ahead of the Negeri Sembilan state election on August 1.
Anwar told reporters in Ipoh that senior officials were free to campaign for their parties, but if they wanted to do so they should resign from posts as ministers, deputy ministers, or members of agency boards.
The warning, according to the SCMP, also covers senior officials in government bodies including the Federal Land Development Authority, Majlis Amanah Rakyat, and the Rubber Industry Smallholders Development Authority.
The ultimatum followed talks with deputies Barisan Nasional chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Gabungan Parti Sarawak leader Fadillah Yusof, with analysts saying the move highlighted tensions within Malaysia’s governing coalition structure.
