UK names John Healey as chancellor to fund PM policy promises

The chancellor is expected to secure financing for higher defence spending, plans to bring utilities into public control, and measures aimed at cutting voters’ living costs, while sticking to the prior government’s borrowing rules.

John Healey was appointed UK chancellor on Monday, after being named by new prime minister Andy Burnham, and will be tasked with funding the premier’s policy promises as he steps into the role this week.

According to the reporting, Healey has largely avoided factional alignment during his political rise, with his diligence highlighted by a past account from his time as defence secretary, when he was said to have taken steps to keep working during overseas travel.

The outlet says the appointment matters because Burnham’s agenda includes higher defence spending, taking utilities into public control, and ways to cut voters’ living costs, alongside commitments not to raise income tax, VAT, or national insurance.

The reporting adds that Burnham has pledged to adhere to the last government’s borrowing rules, positioning Healey in a similar constraint as his predecessor was described to be, and framing the job as balancing tougher fiscal decisions with maintaining support within Labour.
