Balaji’s Network School looks to open Kazakhstan campus after Malaysia clampdown
The school said Kazakhstan will provide a new base after Malaysian authorities ordered its Johor operation to stop and revoked its business license over alleged premises-use violations.
Balaji Srinivasan’s Network School, a community of “digital nomads,” is seeking a new campus in Kazakhstan after regulators in Malaysia took action over alleged licensing breaches, Cointelegraph reported. The Malaysia moves include an order for the Johor operation to cease effective Wednesday, alongside steps to unwind its local status.
Cointelegraph said a memorandum of understanding was signed with Kazakhstan’s Minister of Digital Development, Innovation and Aerospace Industry, Zhaslan Madiyev, to establish the Network School’s first campus in the country. The ministry statement described the agreement as giving the program a potential new base following the Malaysia setback.
The outlet reported that the Forest City campus faced regulatory action on multiple fronts, including the Iskandar Puteri City Council revoking the business license of NSO Malaysia Sdn Bhd. The license revocation was tied to allegations that the company breached licensing conditions and premises-use requirements, and Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation announced it was taking immediate steps to revoke the Malaysia Digital status of NSO Malaysia.
Cointelegraph added that Kazakhstan has been positioning itself as a technology hub and has plans for Central Asia’s first “crypto city” in Alatau. The story also quoted Dragonfly Capital managing partner Haseeb Qureshi saying the Malaysia dispute reinforced the “network state” thesis by pushing the group to negotiate with another country.
