Hong Kong travel experts warn of fatigue, road signs risk in Japan
Experts pointed to longer trips to airports, hotels, and attractions as a factor behind overseas accidents, after two incidents involving Hong Kong residents in Japan within a week.
Hong Kong travel experts are urging residents to prepare for road trips overseas with extra attention to driving fatigue, unfamiliar road signs, and insurance coverage, after two traffic accidents involving Hong Kong residents in Japan within a week, according to SCMP Economy.
Ringo Lee Yiu-pui, honorary life president of the Hong Kong China Automobile Association, said car trips within smaller cities like Hong Kong may take about an hour, but overseas routes that connect airports, hotels, and attractions can take much longer. He added that drivers could become distracted by new roads and GPS systems and may get tired without realizing it, which he described as a likely cause of the accidents.
SCMP Economy cited a fatal crash in Hokkaido on Monday in which a 53-year-old Hong Kong woman died and five others were injured. The report said she was in the front passenger seat of a rental car driven by her 52-year-old husband, and the vehicle crossed into the opposite lane on National Route 38 in Furano, colliding with another car occupied by two Japanese people at around 3:30 p.m. local time.
