Iran warns it will expand strikes if US attacks nuclear sites

The statement followed remarks by President Donald Trump about hitting Iran’s Pickaxe Mountain area, as oil tankers reportedly paused near Yemeni waters amid Red Sea disruption fears.

Iran’s top joint military command said Tehran would expand strikes and target US and allied interests across the region if the US attacks Iran’s nuclear sites, according to Xinhua news agency as carried by FXStreet.

Iranian State TV said a US attack would amount to an expansion of the war in the region, with the statement coming after US President Donald Trump said the US will strike the Pickaxe Mountain area "pretty soon," FXStreet reported.

The renewed escalation risk arrived alongside reports that some oil tankers appeared to pause as they approached Yemeni waters heading into the Red Sea, and an Iran-backed group reportedly emailed shipowners warning against calling at Saudi Arabia’s ports.

FXStreet also noted that markets often move into so-called "risk-off" or "risk-on" positioning in response to geopolitical shocks, with safe-haven currencies typically benefiting in a risk-off environment.
