NZD/USD eyes 0.5850 as New Zealand inflation boosts kiwi support

New Zealand’s annual CPI rose to 4.1% in Q2, above forecasts and the RBNZ’s 3.9% projection, while NZD/USD stays below its 2026 peak near 0.6075.

Action Forex reports that NZD/USD has strengthened against many peers this month, but remains well below its 2026 high near 0.6075, trading in the mid-0.58 area.

The dollar side is a key wildcard as New Zealand’s Q2 inflation surprised higher. Annual CPI accelerated to 4.1%, exceeding both forecasts and the RBNZ’s 3.9% projection, which the outlet says strengthens the case for further tightening after the RBNZ’s surprise July hike to 2.50%.

Action Forex links the rate backdrop to the outlook for NZD/USD’s technical level, saying the pair has reached a pivotal zone around 0.5850 that has flipped between support and resistance during the year and is currently acting as resistance.

With the Fed decision and Middle East tensions looming, the outlet outlines scenarios: a confirmed break above 0.5850 could target 0.6000, while rejection could push the pair toward retesting the 200-period EMA near 0.5781, and a further break below that level would bring the well-defended 0.5600 support back into focus.
