Amherst plans zoning changes for Hampshire College campus reuse

ConnectCRE reports that the 800-acre Hampshire College campus in Amherst, Massachusetts, which is expected to close this fall, is being considered for rezoning to support housing and possible community or business uses.

The town of Amherst is aiming to produce a draft of the official zoning plans by January 2027, following an earlier study conducted with MassDevelopment and three outside consulting agencies.

Housing is a top priority for the site, with experts noting the defunct campus could yield up to 2,000 units.

Commercial development may also be part of the rezoning discussions, according to Jeffrey Bagg, Amherst's director of planning and economic development, as the town frames the redevelopment as a way to address needs identified through the prior study.
